A Vision of Academic Entrepreneurship

Black Mamba Designs was founded in Fall of 2007 by a couple of software engineers. Out the gate, the vision was to build websites or software products until one of them generated revenue. It quickly became clear that this was a poor goal and not fitting of our true ideology- learning. As we progressed the temptation to write software from scratch often outweighed the impact it would have on the production schedule. This idealism led to interesting projects and great learning and fun. For example, some projects required a wiki engine. Though many open source tools exist, we built our own.

Faces have come and gone, but the spirit of learning and development remains. Agile software development is our preferred software development model. Most web applications are programmed in Python with the Django framework. Blogs are commonly deployed with Wordpress or Blogger.

A word about our name. The black mamba is a highly feared, venomous snake in Africa. It’s the fastest snake in the world, and is both aggressive and lethal. The snake itself is not black, except it’s mouth. This is the last thing a person will see when struck by this awesome and fearful reptile. Its bite has a mortality rate of nearly 100% unless the appropriate antivenom can be administered. Its name was chosen since it fits the agile development style that we use- fast design and development with rapid iterative cycles.
